Every file and folder,
with its own icon.
InventIcons puts custom icons and colours next to file and folder names in the Obsidian file explorer. Four icon libraries plus emoji, separate icons for collapsed and expanded folders, regex path masks, per-item text styling and explorer guide lines — all stored in your own vault.
See it in action
Everything the file explorer was missing
A file explorer you can actually read at a glance. Every icon, colour and line is a setting — nothing is written into your notes, and nothing leaves your vault.
Icons where you look
Right-click any file or folder → InventIcons: customize icon. Pick an icon, a colour, a text style — done. The explorer updates immediately.
Four icon libraries + emoji
Lucide (built into Obsidian), Tabler, Boxicons and Phosphor — searchable in one picker — plus a full emoji picker with categories and English name search.
Folders that change state
A folder can carry a different icon and colour when collapsed and when expanded — an open folder actually looks open.
Regex path masks
Assign icons to whole groups of paths with a regular expression,
e.g. ^projects/.*\.md$. First match wins; the rest
inherit your defaults.
Text styling per item
Font family, size, weight, italic and colour — per file or folder,
or globally. Any CSS colour works: #rrggbb,
red, rgb(), hsl().
Icon in the note title
Optionally show a file's icon next to its inline title in the editor, at its own size — the note itself stays untouched Markdown.
Explorer styling
Custom background colour for the explorer panel, horizontal separator lines between items, and vertical indent guide lines — colour and thickness included.
Placement & size
Show icons alongside the name, or let them replace the folder collapse arrows — clicking still expands and collapses. Icon sizes are adjustable.
Config that travels with you
Keep settings in the plugin folder, or in a JSON file inside the
vault (default _config/inventicons.json) so they sync
with your notes. The file is watched and reloaded on external
changes.

Your settings, in your vault
InventIcons never writes into your notes. Icon assignments, defaults, masks, sizes, placement and explorer styling live in one configuration — and you decide where it goes.
Keep it inside the plugin folder (the classic Obsidian way), or inside
the vault as a portable JSON file — _config/inventicons.json
by default, or any path you like. The vault option syncs with your notes
through whatever sync you already use, and the plugin watches the file,
reloading it when another device changes it.
Every property — icon, colour, text style — resolves independently, in the same order: the item's own setting first, then the first matching regex mask, then the global default for files or folders. So you can style a whole tree with one mask and still override a single folder.
FAQ
Is it really lifetime?
Yes — one payment unlocks this major version forever, on all your devices, tied to your email.
What if it doesn't work for me?
That's exactly why the free version is a full demo: try it on your own vault before paying. See the license terms for the no-warranty / refund policy.
Does it change my notes?
No. Icons are display-only decorations in the file explorer. Nothing is written into your Markdown files, no frontmatter is added, and removing the plugin leaves your vault exactly as it was.
Do the icons sync between my devices?
Yes, if you set the storage location to "inside vault": the configuration becomes a JSON file in your vault and travels with whatever sync you already use. The plugin watches that file and reloads it when another device changes it.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes — InventIcons runs on Obsidian for desktop and mobile.
Do I need to download icon packs?
No. Tabler, Boxicons and Phosphor ship inside the plugin, Lucide is already part of Obsidian, and the emoji list is bundled too. Everything works offline.
Can I move my license to a new computer?
Yes — just enter the same email and key in the new install.
What if I buy more than once with the same email?
You'll get the exact same key every time — one email maps to one license, so there's no benefit to buying twice. If you want a separate license (e.g. for someone else), buy it with a different email.
